Vena Energy Launches Australian Green Energy Project in Western Downs

Revolutionizing Renewable Energy in Queensland

The Western Downs region of Queensland, Australia, has become a hub for innovation and sustainability in the renewable energy sector. Vena Energy, a leading provider of green energy solutions, is poised to embark on a groundbreaking project in the region, set to begin construction of the 320MW Wandoan South Solar 2 facility. This massive solar farm, expected to be operational by mid-2027, will produce approximately 700 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy annually, further solidifying Australia’s position as a global leader in renewable energy. The project will not only contribute to the country’s commitment to net zero by 2050 but also play a pivotal role in Queensland’s rapidly evolving energy landscape. Wandoan South Solar 2 is the second expansion of Vena’s Australian development clusters and marks a significant milestone in the company’s portfolio of green power projects and battery storage capacity. As of now, Vena boasts a substantial presence in various stages across Australia, with a total of 732MW of renewable energy generation capacity and 600MWh of battery storage capacity. Owen Sela, head of Australia at Vena Energy, emphasized the importance of the Wandoan South Solar 2 project, stating: “Wandoan South Solar 2 will play a crucial role in Queensland’s energy landscape, adding significant renewable generation capacity that will help power the state’s future while supporting Australia’s commitment to net zero by 2050. The broader Wandoan South Project has already delivered tangible economic and social benefits, including the completion of Queensland’s first utility-scale 150MWh BESS in 2022 and the 168MW Wandoan South Solar 1, which began commercial operation in 2024.”

The project has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with CleanCo, a Queensland Government-supported entity that retails, generates, and develops low-emission energy. This agreement will enable CleanCo to provide renewable energy sourced from Wandoan South Solar 2 to several of Queensland’s major employers, aiding their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote the state’s transition to a sustainable energy future. CleanCo CEO Tom Metcalfe highlighted the significance of the project, saying: “With construction now getting underway, the solar farm will soon be delivering real benefits for the Western Downs and beyond. CleanCo is uniquely positioned as the state’s only pumped hydro operator to store the energy from this project during the day and deliver it to Queenslanders when it’s needed the most during early evening and overnight. We are backing an energy future that is affordable, reliable and sustainable, delivering long-term value to customers and communities across the state.”

A key highlight of the project is its potential to produce enough energy to power around 120,000 average Queensland households, thereby reducing approximately 568,000t of CO2 emissions and conserving about 490 million litres of water annually compared to traditional thermal energy generation. The construction phase of the project is expected to create up to 400 jobs, offering employment opportunities to local and First Nations communities. This not only benefits the local economy but also contributes to the project’s sustainability goals. Vena Energy’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in this project, which will undoubtedly contribute to the region’s growth and development. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Vena Energy remains at the forefront of green energy solutions, working towards a more sustainable future for all. Key Facts

Project Capacity 320MW
Expected Annual Energy Production 700GWh
