Agreements signed with battery energy storage projects

The agreements were signed with the Botswana Energy Corporation (BEC) and the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA). The projects are the 300 MW Mponeng Solar Power Project and the 100 MW Mponeng Wind Power Project.

The Projects

The Mponeng Solar Power Project is a 300 MW solar power plant located in the Mponeng area of the Kalahari Desert.

Local Entity Participation and BEE Ownership

The two projects are expected to attract investment of some R4.7 billion with local entity participation of around 42.23% and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) ownership of 40%. This indicates that the projects will have a significant level of local involvement and BEE ownership, which is a key aspect of the South African government’s economic transformation policies.

This includes R21 million for the construction phase and R22 million for the projects’ operations.
