FuelCell Energy and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering

DANBURY, Conn. and KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, March 06, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The collaborative journey for both FuelCell Energy and MHB started with a memorandum of understanding in February 2023 on developing hydrogen production facilities across Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. The collaboration, under the Joint Development Agreement, will support a Detailed Feasibility Study for a low-carbon fuel production1 facility using solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC)2 technology with carbon dioxide and water as feedstocks in Malaysia. FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL) and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (KLSE: MHB), have announced the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to co-develop large-scale hydrogen production systems and technologies across Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.

Clean Hydrogen Production Takes a Major Leap Forward with FuelCell Energy and MHB Partnership.

A New Era in Clean Hydrogen Production

The partnership between FuelCell Energy and MHB (Munich, Germany-based Municipal Utility) marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of clean energy solutions. The Joint Development Agreement (JDA) is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of hydrogen as a key component in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Key Objectives of the JDA

  • Develop a scalable and cost-effective clean hydrogen production technology
  • Enhance the energy efficiency of the production process
  • Improve the overall sustainability of the hydrogen production process
  • Increase the availability of clean hydrogen for various applications, including transportation, power generation, and industrial processes
  • The JDA is driven by a shared vision to make clean hydrogen production easily accessible and viable. This partnership aims to accelerate the development of a low-carbon economy by providing a reliable and efficient source of clean energy.

    Benefits of the Partnership

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: The partnership aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing a clean and sustainable source of energy.

The study will also assess the feasibility of integrating SOEC technology with existing power generation infrastructure.

    Introduction

The partnership between FuelCell Energy and MHB (Munich, Bavaria, Germany) is a significant step forward in the development of low-carbon energy solutions. The collaboration aims to support a contract awarded to FuelCell Energy for a Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) that will evaluate the production of low-carbon fuel utilizing SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell) technology. This technology has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.

    SOEC Technology

SOEC technology is a type of electrolysis that uses a solid oxide material to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This process is more efficient and environmentally friendly compared to traditional electrolysis methods. The use of SOEC technology has several advantages, including:

  • Higher efficiency: SOEC technology can achieve higher efficiency rates compared to traditional electrolysis methods. Lower emissions: The production of hydrogen using SOEC technology results in lower greenhouse gas emissions. Flexibility: SOEC technology can be integrated with various power generation infrastructure, making it a versatile solution for different energy applications.

A New Era of Hydrogen Development in Malaysia

The collaboration between MHB and FuelCell Energy marks a significant milestone in the development of the hydrogen value chain in Malaysia. This partnership is a testament to the country’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

    Key Objectives of the Partnership

The partnership aims to develop a comprehensive hydrogen value chain in Malaysia, which includes:

  • Hydrogen production: MHB and FuelCell Energy will work together to establish a reliable and efficient hydrogen production system. Hydrogen storage: The companies will develop a robust hydrogen storage system to ensure a stable supply of hydrogen.
