Northland Power Expands Battery Storage Capabilities with Completion of Jurassic BESS Project

Northland Power, a Canadian-based global power producer, has announced the completion of the Jurassic Battery Energy Storage System project in Alberta, Canada. The project, located in Cypress County, is a 80 MW, 2-hour (160 MWh) battery storage system that will provide energy storage solutions for the province’s energy grid. This achievement marks another milestone in Northland Power’s expansion of its battery storage capabilities.

“Building on the success of our Oneida Battery Storage Project, which is nearing operations, today’s announcement represents another great milestone for Northland Power,” said Christine Healy, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are delivering needed battery storage as one of the ways we provide energy solutions in Canada and around the world.”

“This BESS project will enhance the stability and reliability of Alberta’s energy grid, expand our footprint in Canada, and diversify our asset base,” added Christine Healy. “It highlights the growth potential of our multi-technology approach.”

Project Details and Financials

  • Project cost: Approximately $120 million
  • Construction costs: Funded by non-recourse project-level financing, existing cash and available liquidity
  • Annual EBITDA contribution: Approximately $15 million

The Jurassic BESS project is expected to contribute approximately $15 million of annual Adjusted EBITDA once fully operational. The project cost is approximately $120 million, with construction costs funded by non-recourse project-level financing, existing cash and available liquidity.

Once completed, the Jurassic BESS project will be Alberta’s largest battery energy storage system. The project will benefit from a 15-year fixed price contract for capacity, ensuring a stable revenue stream for Northland Power.
