How Cold Weather Affects EV Range
When it’s cold outside, the battery of an electric vehicle is less efficient. This is because the cold temperatures reduce the flow of electrical current through the battery, which in turn reduces the amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery. As a result, EVs tend to consume more energy to travel the same distance as a gasoline-powered car. The reduced efficiency of EVs in cold weather can lead to a significant reduction in range, often by as much as 40% in extreme cases.
The study found that the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Kia Niro EV were the most unreliable EVs in the cold.
